IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Care
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Current registration as a general Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Post Registered Nurse education in gerontology/gerontological, and has at least one year of experience working as a registered nurse recognized by the Fixing Long-Term Care Act. Demonstrated effective leadership. Skilled in planning, coordinating and supervising a comprehensive nursing care program with a multidisciplinary focus. Minimum has at least three years of experience working as a registered nurse in a managerial or supervisory capacity in a health care setting. Demonstrated effective communication (verbal, written & electronic), and interpersonal skills. Current certification in infection control from the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology.
JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Director of Care this position is responsible and accountable for assisting the Director of Care in the administration, organization and management of the Nursing Department and leading Infection, Prevention and Control Program. These responsibilities shall be carried out in accordance with facility policies, procedures, mission and philosophy, collective agreements, and applicable legislation.
JOB DUTIES
Inservice Training
- Coordinates staff education and acts as an educational resource to managers and committees, assisting them in identifying and responding to learning needs of staff.
- Plans, designs and evaluates with the manager requesting educational programs.
- Participates in the strategic planning process and identifies training/education required to support identified organizational changes.
- Designs and delivers educational programs using the principles of adult learning
- Provides in-service education opportunities to all shifts.
- Provides opportunity for staff to request educational sessions and to evaluate the
- content, delivery and effectiveness of the sessions they attend or participate in.
- Evaluates educational programs annually to determine if learning· objectives are met, and staff develop skills and increase knowledge to meet residents’ needs.
- Provides a facility-wide general orientation program that responds to learning needs of new staff.
- On request assists the Multidisciplinary team and support services both internally and externally.
- Provides reports on staff participation.
- Assists with the coordination of educational opportunities with other agencies to meet educational requirements of the agency.
- Participates in decision making at management level.
- Participates in research activities.
- Promotes liaison, cooperation and coordination of services/programs with community agencies and other Health Care providers.
- Assists with the provision of opportunities for placement of students for education and research, according to facility policies.
- Maintains and develops records for education.
- Chairs/participates with committees in both the facility and the community.
- Provides educational sessions at institutions and within the communities to enhance knowledge and understanding of geriatric principles and practices.
- Participates in labour relations activities as required.
Nursing Programming
- Assists and promotes staff development and continuing education of nursing staff including some nursing-specific orientation and computer programming.
- In conjunction with Administration, develops policies and procedures.
- On request from D.O.N. assists in monitoring and evaluating staff compliance with facility and nursing policies and procedures
- Complies with all legislation and regulations pertinent to nursing practice knows and interprets nursing practice, the Fixing Long-Term Care Act and the Homes Policies and Procedures.
- Assists with the development of Nursing philosophy and statements of purpose for Nursing services and standards for resident care, involving residents where possible.
- Assists in the development, implementation and auditing of nursing services policies and procedures as required.
Infection Prevention and Control
- Working with the interdisciplinary team to implement the infection prevention and control program.
- Managing and overseeing the infection prevention and control program.
- Overseeing the delivery of infection prevention and control education to all staff, caregivers, volunteers, visitors and residents.
- Auditing of infection prevention and control practices in the home.
- Evaluates and updates Infection Prevention and Control program at least annually in accordance with the standards and protocols issued by the Director of the Ministry of Long-Term Care (MLTC)
- Conducting regular infectious disease surveillance.
- Convening the Outbreak Management Team at the outset of an outbreak and regularly throughout an outbreak.
- Convening the interdisciplinary infection prevention and control team at least quarterly, and at a more frequent interval during an infectious disease outbreak in the home.
- Reviewing any daily and monthly screening results collected by the licensee to determine whether any action is required.
- Implementing required improvements to the infection prevention and control program as required by audits.
- Ensuring that there is in place a hand hygiene program in accordance with any standard or protocol issued by the Director of the MLTC.
- Oversees and implements immunization programs for residents, staff and essential caregivers.
EDUCATION, HEALTH & SAFETY
- Manages and oversees the Occupational Health & Safety committee to maintain a safe working environment
- Oversees WSIB Claims and Early Return to Work programs in conjunction with the Employee, Union Representative, WSIB, Human Resources and the Supervisor.
- Complies with Fire and Safety Regulations and attains proficiency in the method of sounding fire alarms, fire evacuation procedures, proper use of fire extinguishing equipment and other procedures designed to ensure the security and protection of Residents of the Home.
- Reports accidents and/or safety concerns to supervisor immediately.
- Encourages the practice and adherence to safety standards in the workplace.
- Ensures staff will receive an orientation outlining health and safety policies, health and safety programs, safety issues, and expectations of safe work practices.
- Provides all contractors, sub-contractors, volunteers and students with a safety orientation to the Home.
- Coordinates and documents annual review of health and safety programs in the Home.
