What is the application process for long term care in Ontario?

All applications to long term care homes in Ontario are managed by the Ontario Health atHome. As you begin the application process to long term care, you will be assigned a Ontario Health atHome caseworker who will act as your main contact throughout the process. To find the Ontario Health atHome that serves your area, click here (Find Your Local Branch | Ontario Health atHome) and enter your postal code.

Once the local Ontario Health atHome has determined that you or your loved one is eligible for admission to a long term care Home, your next step is to choose the Homes to which you would like to apply. It is recommended that you tour several long term care homes and select the ones where you think you or your loved one would be most comfortable living. When a bed becomes available at one of the homes you selected, you will be notified by the Ontario Health atHome (in accordance with the waiting list). You will then have 24 hours in which to accept or decline the bed offer.

Are there waiting lists for long term care and how long are they?

The majority of long-term care Homes have waiting lists based upon the type of accommodation for which you have applied. Waitlists are managed by Ontario Health atHome. If you have a question about the status of your application, or place on a waiting list, it is best to contact your Ontario Health atHome care coordinator directly.

What special training do staff in the Home have?

The staff who provide care and services at Kenora District Homes are all fully qualified and trained in their roles. In addition, each year staff are provided with ongoing education on regulated topics and are given opportunities to participate in additional relevant education relating to their job function.

What types of accommodation does Kenora District Homes offer?

Kenora District Homes offers three types of accommodation for residents;

  1. Private – one bed in a room with a private bathroom
  2. Semi-Private – two beds in a room with a shared bathroom
  3. Basic – may be either three or four beds in a room with a shared bathroom

What is short stay respite accommodation?

Short stay accommodation is offered by Princess Court for individuals who only require a brief stay in a care setting for reasons such as recovery from an illness or surgery, or the temporary absence of a caregiver. Princess Court offers short stay programs for accommodation up to 60 days at a time, to a maximum of 90 days during the calendar year. There are several different types of short stay programs available at Kenora District Homes.

What is the cost of long term care accommodation?

The cost of long term care accommodation is regulated by the Ministry of Long Term Care (MOLTC). Rates are reviewed annually by the MOLTC and are standardized across Ontario. A breakdown of the current rates is available on the MOLTC website.

What subsidies are available in Ontario?

For individuals with lower incomes who may have difficulty affording Basic Accommodation in long term care, the government offers an accommodation cost subsidy. The subsidy is not available to people requesting Semi-Private or Private accommodation.

Do you have accommodations for couples?

Yes, we have accommodations that are suitable for couples. Couples who would like to live together should discuss their request with their local Ontario Health atHome care coordinator or the Admission Coordinator at Kenora District Homes. If a suitable room is not available upon admission, a couple can be admitted to separate rooms and placed on a waiting list for a shared room.

Can residents have their personal pets live with them in the Home?

Residents cannot have personal pets live with them in the Home.  Although we encourage pets to visit at our homes we do have some general guidelines. Pets must be under the control of their owners at all times while visiting in the home. Pets must have appropriate and up-to-date vaccinations. Owners are responsible to clean up after any pet accidents. Only pets that are comfortable with people are allowed to visit. For more information on the conditions for pet visitation talk to the Activation Coordinator or Administrator at Kenora District Homes.

Are smokers eligible to live at Kenora District Homes?

Yes. Smokers are not restricted from living in long term care Homes however they must be able to smoke safely without supervision. All smoking must be done outside of the Home in accordance to the Smoking bylaws of nine (9) metres away from the building.

What should I bring with me to the Home on the day of admission?

Women

  • 6-8 undershirts or camisoles
  • 10-14 under panties or shorts
  • 3 brassieres, if appropriate
  • 2 under slips
  • 6 nightgowns or pyjamas
  • 2 housecoats
  • 10 pairs of socks, available with no skid soles
  • 3 pairs of washable slippers with rubber soles to prevent slipping
  • 2 cardigans
  • 1 pair of flat shoes with sturdy support and rubber soles to prevent slipping
  • 1 sun hat
  • 1 spring coat
  • 1 winter hat
  • 1 winter coat
  • 1 pair winter boots
  • 2 pair winter gloves
  • 1-2 dresses
  • 3-5 pants or jogging pants
  • 4-6 blouses or tops
  • 1-2 skirts
  • Panty hose, stockings, sun glasses, scarves
  • Favourite toiletries including toothbrush, brush, comb, make-up, etc. (basic toiletries are available)
  • Twin size comforter/bedspread.

Men

  • 6-8 undershirts or t-shirts
  • 10-14 underpants or shorts
  • 10 pairs of socks, available with no skid soles
  • 3 pairs of washable slippers with rubber soles to prevent slipping
  • 6 pyjamas
  • 2 bathrobes
  • 1-2 pair long underwear
  • 8 shirts, long and short sleeved
  • 6 trousers or jogging pants (darker colours)
  • 2 pairs of good trousers (darker colours)
  • 2 cardigans
  • 1 pair of shoes with good support and rubber soles to prevent slipping
  • 1 sun hat
  • 1 spring jacket
  • 1 winter jacket
  • 1 winter hat
  • 1 pair of winter boots
  • 2 pairs of winter gloves
  • 2 belts or suspenders
  • Wallet, watch, scarf
  • Favourite toiletries including razor (electric shaver preferred), etc. (basic toiletries are available)
  • Twin size comforter/bedspread.

Can residents have a television, phone and/or Internet in their room?

Televisions, radios, telephones and computers are welcomed in all of our rooms. It is the resident or family’s responsibility to provide each device and contact a service provider to setup the service to the room. If the resident is already subscribed to any of these services, you will simply need to have the provider transfer the existing service to their room in the Home. They may even be able to keep their current phone number. Ask the service provider for details. Cell phones and wireless Internet are permitted in the Home.

Basic Television is billed at a reduced rate by the home to those residents who wish it.

Additional services such as a movie channels or sports channels can be arranged by resident or family through Shaw Cable. Televisions are not provided.

What are the meal choices?​

We appreciate the importance of a quality dining experience and are proud of the menu selection we offer. Meals are cooked fresh each day in our on-site kitchens and are served in the dining rooms. Residents are always provided with two entrée choices at each meal. Residents are provided with three (3) well-balanced meals per day, as well as refreshments between meals and snacks in the afternoon and evening.

Are special diets available?

Yes. We cater to a wide variety of special diets, including diabetic, vegetarian and no-pork. Each person’s diet is assessed at the time of admission and quarterly therein. Food intake is monitored at each meal. If there are noticeable changes, a referral to the Dietitian is made and changes are implemented accordingly. If you have a question about our ability to offer a specific diet, please contact the Admissions Coordinator.

Can residents keep their own family physicians?

Residents are assigned an Attending Physician at the time of admission based on the Home area where the resident will be living. Although it is not mandatory, we encourage residents to take on the Physician provided by the Home to ensure good communication of health information, and to allow for on-site accessibility. Residents may retain their own Family Physician from the community provided the physician has signed an Attending Physician Agreement with the home and is willing to comply with the requirements of the Ministry of Long Term Care (MOLTC).

Do you offer physiotherapy and rehabilitation services?

Kenora District Homes offers a range of physiotherapy and rehabilitation services. There are also alternative therapies and restorative care programs available. Each new resident is assessed to determine an appropriate physiotherapy regime shortly after admission. Our objective is to maintain and restore residents’ current abilities and strengths through a variety of physical programs designed to meet individual needs.

When are visiting hours?

The Home welcomes families to visit as often as possible and to stay as long as possible. Guests are a very important part of a resident’s life, and we encourage regular visits by relatives and friends. We practice an open hour’s visitation policy with consideration for the comfort and schedules of all residents. It is suggested that visitors who plan to visit after 8:30 p.m. call the Home and advise the Nurse Manager of their plans as the doors are locked after this time. There is an intercom at the front door to page the nursing staff to let you in once the entrance security has been activated for the evening.

Are there rules about vacation and leaves from the Home?

Yes. Residents may have overnight leaves of up to 48 hours per week. Extended leaves or vacations of up to 21 days can also be accommodated. It is important to know that accommodation fees remain the same even though the resident has taken an overnight or vacation leave. The Unit Nurse should be notified of any plans for an overnight leave or vacation so we can work with you to coordinate and review all care and medication needs.
